National Minerals, Energy and Industry Group

The AIBC National Minerals, Energy and Industry Group was formed in 2018 to create a network of members active in Australia-Indonesia resources industries, to facilitate information exchange between members, to highlight the successes of members in Indonesia and to advocate for open, reciprocal and mutually advantageous business opportunities between the two countries.

Historically minerals and coal mining has been the largest Australian business sector to invest in Indonesia with many of Indonesia’s major, now Indonesian-owned, mines established by Australian explorers and miners. Australian oil and gas companies have also partnered in significant Indonesian projects, and Indonesia continues to be one of the biggest export markets for Australian mining equipment technology and services (‘METS’).

With bilateral government commitments to energy transition over the next 30 years, the Group has expanded its mission to include downstream industries essential for materials, equipment and technology for infrastructure, smart cities, and renewable and alternative energy generation.

With the recent acquisitions of Australian mines and service companies by Indonesian investors, the Group is also attentive to the AIBC membership objective to represent “Indonesian business people in Australia”.  The ratification of the Indonesia-Australia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IA CEPA) in 2020 also marks a further development for long-term bilateral aspects of the sector: the agreement provides some competitive advantages for Australian METS companies entering Indonesia while Indonesian mining investors and METS companies and their products and services now face comparatively few entry restrictions in Australia.

Since inception the Group has participated in Australia’s International Mining and Resources Conference and Expo (IMARC) as a content supplier, an advocacy and information exhibitor, and as a meeting hub for AIBC members attending. AIBC booths underwritten by member-sponsors and Indonesian investment panels were features of the 2018 and 2019 in-person editions in Melbourne and return for the 2022 first-post-pandemic event in Sydney, this time with a larger booth in partnership with the Government of Indonesia through the Ministry of Investment/BKPM.

The Group also provides market information through newsletters and webinars and is currently finalising a Teams environment available only for AIBC members.

The Group is Chaired by Geoffrey Gold and led by a core group of members. Contact Geoff by email at minenergyind@aibc.com.au with any queries.
